One of the main objectives of managers is organization. They can organize a workforce to get a project done, organize a project to achieve a certain goal or organize a team to focus on a specific problem. A manager should have effective organization and management skills to thrive in our competitive business arena.

Organizing People

Organizing projects require a comprehensive understanding of the business goals, identifying resources(tools, people, equipment and supplies) needed to finish the job and ability to communicate targets effectively.

Managers should involve themselves in the project but from a distance to ensure that it is running smoothly as planned. Managers can take advantage of the many tools that can help organize projects including Gantt charts to software like Microsoft Project.

You should start by knowing the target result. Proceed by listing the steps needed to achieve the result, the timeframe for each step, the resources and costs and the workforce needed to get the project done.

Organizing Teams   

Organization and Management strategies need the ability to effectively coordinate teams to move toward the accomplishment of a particular goal. An individual can not accomplish a task by himself.

Joining people together with a common goal and giving them motivation and resources to accomplish a task is a crucial management tactic.

To organize teams effectively, you need an identified and well-communicated goal, the choosing of the right people to join the group, organization of the work to be done, clear instructions, constant monitoring of progress, evaluation and follow up.

You begin by identifying the people in your organization who have the right skills, background, knowledge, and interests who will contribute to the project.

Get approval from their superiors if needed. Explain the goal of the team, the expected outcomes of the team’s job and the contributions expected of each team member.

Be there to offer support, guidance, and resources to your team members as the project starts.

A lot goes into managing people. Some are task-oriented while others consist of the psychology of motivation and human behavior. Learning the various management techniques helps a business leader to build stronger teams that are more productive and effective. You can choose to combine these strategies as the need arises.

Lead by example to show subordinates that you are held to the same standards of excellence as they are. Tasks may vary from manager and employee, but the same professional ethics exist.

You should be on time and never late, dress appropriately and get the job done with excellence. Your subordinates will respect you if you are consistent in abiding by rules that are based on being the best professional possible.

Look for talent on your team and focus on developing it. You can do this through training programs and mentoring with other leaders of the organization. If a subordinate seeks a path to higher levels of success, he becomes motivated to work harder and do a better job.      

People don’t like to be micromanaged, it is an overbearing way to lead. Trust your team is capable of making the right decisions in any situation. By empowering your team, you are sending a message that you trust them to represent the company with excellence. The result is usually a happier team that is encouraged to perform well and a manager who has more time to work on other areas of strategic planning and development.
